Adding systematic trading to a discretionary fund

A $2B discretionary fund wanted a rules-based, uncorrelated sleeve to offer investors, without turning itself into a quant shop or running a year-long build.

Challenge

  • Investors were asking for a systematic, uncorrelated sleeve.
  • Building it in-house meant hiring quants and engineers and standing up data, backtesting and execution.
  • Managing risk and compliance, and integrating with their current trading systems.
  • A multi-quarter project, far outside a discretionary desk's core.

What we did

We deployed inside the fund's own cloud and infrastructure, plugging our systematic trading system into their environment and running it on their data. We built the risk and compliance tooling around it and integrated with the desks and teams across the fund to take the full architecture, research, backtesting, execution and reporting, into production.

Outcome

A live, uncorrelated sleeve that satisfies investors and diversifies the book, running entirely on the fund's own cloud, data and infrastructure, with no new quants or engineers hired.

Running systematic strategies for a family office

A $500M family office wanted to run systematic macro and customised versions of well-known strategies directly, without an intermediary and without building a tech and quant team to do it.

Challenge

  • Wanted to run systematic macro and customised versions of well-known strategies directly, with no intermediary.
  • No appetite to hire and manage an in-house tech and quant team to operate them.
  • The strategy IP had to stay entirely their own.

What we did

They ran their strategies on our infrastructure, and we operated the desk for them: execution, monitoring, reconciliation and reporting, end to end. Every line of strategy logic stayed their own IP, with no intermediary between them and the market.

Outcome

A live systematic book running directly under their name in two months, with no team to hire or manage and full ownership of the strategies retained.

0 tech or quant hires
100% strategy IP retained

A systematic PM's stack, built inside a multi-strategy fund

A systematic PM was joining a multi-strategy fund in six months and needed his strategies implemented inside the fund, on its own infrastructure, by the time he arrived.

Challenge

  • Cleaning and preparing the data was a long job in its own right.
  • The fund's infrastructure was not ready to run the PM's strategies.
  • A pod's economics could not carry a private engineering team.

What we did

We started before the PM joined: building the data connectors, cleaning the data, and porting his system into the fund's infrastructure. Every signal was generated inside the fund, for the fund, so neither the PM nor the platform had to commit to a multi-million budget in teams and infrastructure.

Outcome

The PM went live six weeks after joining, trading his own strategies on the fund's infrastructure, with no multi-million build and no private engineering team.
